“Supernatural Contentment [1 Timothy 6:2-10]”
A sermon by Pastor Dave McMurry. More about Grace Bible Church: https://begrace.org
Summary
Drawing from 1 Timothy 6:2–10, Pastor Dave preaches on what he calls “supernatural contentment” — the kind of deep, settled satisfaction that can only come from Jesus Christ, not from wealth, status, or worldly systems. He warns the church against prosperity gospels, which promise health and financial gain in exchange for faith or money, pointing out that false teachers use theological smoke screens of controversy and division to distract from their own lack of genuine godly fruit. As 1 Timothy 6:6 reminds us, “godliness with contentment is great gain” — and that gain is found in Christ alone, not in a mechanical formula of religious behavior.
Pastor Dave goes on to challenge the congregation to begin enjoying holiness now, rather than treating God’s moral commands as burdens or obstacles to identity. Like a flower simply being beautiful or a bird singing its song, believers are invited to delight in what God has given and to obey him in the present moment, trusting that ultimate prosperity awaits when we see Jesus face to face. He also sounds a clear warning about greed, noting that the love of money — not money itself — is “a root of all kinds of evils” (1 Tim. 6:10), and that any hyper-desire that replaces Jesus as our foundation becomes a functional idol and a snare.
