Have you ever watched as something you thought was secure came crashing down? In 2005, we witnessed the devastating collapse of New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. The city’s foundations—its levees—weren’t built deep enough into solid bedrock. They were rooted in sand, and when the storms came, there was utter destruction.

Jesus warned us about this very thing. If we don’t build our lives on solid rock, our houses will fall apart when the floods and storms come. This warning speaks directly to our lives today.

Jesus Christ: Our Ultimate Foundation

In 2 Peter 1:1-2, the apostle Peter begins his final letter—his last will and testament—before his death. This short letter hammers home one crucial truth: in a world of instability, we need to build our lives on Jesus Christ rather than on false foundations like pleasure, money, or success.

“Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” (2 Peter 1:1-2)

Notice how Peter repeats “Jesus Christ” three times in just two verses. He’s making it clear: Jesus is our ultimate foundation. Let’s explore three ways Jesus provides this foundation.

Jesus Sends Messengers

Peter introduces himself as both “Simeon” (his Hebrew birth name) and “Peter” (the Greek nickname Jesus gave him meaning “Rock”). I love what Kent Hughes says about Peter: “When I think of Peter, I imagine a broad-shouldered, loud, extroverted, assertive man who is always sweating… a headstrong, unbridled hulk who was always getting into trouble.”

If God can use Peter, God can use you.

Peter identifies himself as both “a servant and an apostle.” The word for servant here is the stronger term that implies being bound—”I don’t belong to me, I belong to Jesus.” This is our identity too. When we’re honest about our past and clear about the redemptive future Jesus has for us, we become effective messengers for Christ.

Jesus Buys Our Equal Standing

Peter addresses his letter “to those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours.” The Greek term here means “equal preciousness” or “equal value.” Think about that—we have equal standing with Peter the apostle! The only difference is that he wrote Scripture and we don’t.

How is this possible? It comes “by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” Jesus purchased us, redeemed us from the slave block of sin. Even more incredible—when the Father sees you, if you’re trusting in Jesus, He sees you through His perfect, righteous Son. You’re in Him.

This truth should transform how we live. We no longer need to fight for position or struggle with insecurity. God has saved you. You have equal precious standing with all other saints.

Jesus Grows Us in Knowledge

Peter writes, “May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” Notice the word “multiplied”—this isn’t a one-time deal but an ongoing growth.

The Biblical concept of knowledge isn’t just intellectual understanding but intimate experience. As we grow in our knowledge of Jesus—studying Scripture and obeying what He says—grace and peace multiply in our lives. Like seedlings sprouting after rain, our spiritual lives flourish the more we walk with Jesus.

Putting It Into Practice

Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:24-27 that everyone who hears His words and does them is like a wise person who builds their house on rock. When storms come—and they will—that house stands firm.

But here’s the good news for those who feel overwhelmed: before Jesus calls us to build on the rock, He reminds us in Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and it will be opened to you.”

Our heavenly Father is generous and loves to give good gifts. As we strive to build our lives on Jesus, we can continually cry out, “Oh Lord, help me!” And He loves to answer that prayer.

In what areas of your life are you building on sand instead of the rock of Jesus Christ? What false foundations need to be replaced? Today, ask God to help you build your life on the only foundation that will stand when the storms come.
